Here are five great coffee shops in Kowloon that not only serve good espressos and hand drip pour overs, but also roast their own beans here in Hong Kong. If you want to try reducing your monthly coffee budget, you can buy beans to brew at work or at home.

Return’s Hong Kong-roasted coffee has won awards around the world, including the 2018 and 2017 Australian International Coffee Bronze and Silver Awards for espresso and filter coffee. With four different house blends, “ESC”, “SHIFT”, “ALT”, and “CTRL”, you can try all sorts of flavor profiles for your latte or black coffee, from pistachio and dark chocolate in the award-winning “ALT” to sweet toffee and nutty in “CTRL” when mixed with milk.

Craft is home to the 2017 World Cup Tasters Champion and 2019 Hong Kong Brewers Cup Champion. Their “Honeycomb” house blend espresso features floral and fruity tasting notes with hints of apricot jam. Their pour over menu with locally roasted single origin beans is also constantly changing and features coffee beans with new and experimental processing methods like semi-carbonic maceration.

Grab a coffee with the 2018 Hong Kong Barista Champion here and choose from two house blend espressos, “Aromatic” with fruity and floral flavors or “Mouthfeel” with nutty flavors and full-bodied texture. V60 pour over, Aeropress, syphon and French press brewing methods are also available for single origin beans. Every Friday night is “Coffee Premier” at Knockbox, a night to gather from 6-10pm and try unlimited samples of the coffee locally roasted that week.

Ideaology is the roaster behind the coffee served in three cafes around Tsim Sha Tsui. Specializing in roasting, coffee consulting and training, Ideology offers a variety of brewing and tasting workshops every month. Their monthly subscription features espresso blend or single origin beans in whole bean or drip bag products for simple brewing.
